Bovine respiratory disease (BRD) is the leading cause of death for beef calves older than 3 weeks,1 and it is one of the most costly diseases producers fight in their farm or feeding operations. Choose trusted vaccines, like Pyramid® 5 + Presponse® SQ, that help protect those calves through a unique adjuvant system.
Each of the vaccines and vaccine combinations in the PYRAMID line contains the MetaStim® adjuvant system, which enhances immune response to the vaccine.
The METASTIM advantage is based on a dual-phase formulation system composed of lipid droplets in an aqueous, surfactant solution. METASTIM helps hide some of the viral antigens by concealing them within the vaccine droplet, giving the vaccine a Trojan horse effect. The lipid-surfactant droplets are eventually broken down, releasing the virus antigen. The vaccine’s slow release allows for prolonged immune system exposure and effects a positive impact on immune system response.
“METASTIM is gentle on the animal’s system, but still heightens the immune response against the key viruses and bacterial antigens,” says Dr. Jerry Woodruff, Professional Services Veterinarian with Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica, Inc.
Dr. Woodruff cautions that not all vaccine adjuvants are created equal. “There are harsher adjuvants used in some products that can cause the opposite response,” he says. “A harsh adjuvant can cause an excessive inflammatory response and possible abscesses at the site of the injection. A smooth adjuvant like METASTIM can make all the difference in immune response.”
