While the DeBerry's didn't lose any of their stocker calves during February's historic freeze, Tracy says he lost about a dozen newborn calves. "It was tough," he says of a storm with windchills that "felt like" -20 degrees.

"Probably about half of those froze to death and there were a few that got smashed or laid on or stepped on because the cattle bunch up when it's cold. You would think cows would know better but they don't.

"We'd get out in the middle of the night and go check them. It was a matter of timing. There was a few pretty cold nights. If the wind didn't blow, there wasn't any problem, but when that wind was blowing so bad, those calves just didn't want to get up. And if you weren't there within probably 30 to 45 minutes of when they were born, they probably weren't going to make it.

"We'd put them in the pickup floorboard for an hour so to warm up and then tube them or drench them with colostrum. Then if we felt okay about them we'd put them back out there with their mom."
