The onset of DNA marker testing has the industry asking, “What’s the value of genomics?” Presently, the technology allows cattlemen to more efficiently manage genetic defects and to increase the accuracy of EPDs, particularly on young, unproven bulls. In the future, the technology may help cattlemen better pin down hard-to-measure traits like fertility, feed efficiency and resistance to disease. Alison Van Eenennaam, University of California-Davis Extension beef geneticist, gives her perspective on the issue.
