Weekly Cattle Market Wrap Up | Feeder cattle see big run

USDA Market Reporter Ed Czerwien provides his weekly market outlook on feeder cattle and slaughter cows.

Feeder cattle saw a big run on the heels of improving prices with 42,400 head. Prices were steady to $7 higher with the biggest jump in prices on the 7-weight heifers and smallest rally was on the lighter weights which have very small volume. Also during the month of March, Texas, Kansas and Oklahoma auctions had a large run of 700-899 lbs. heifers off of wheat pastures.

Turning to slaughter cows, there was a big run of cows at USDA test auctions but that included some bred cow specials again. Prices were steady to $2 lower and impacted by wild swings in prices for 90 percent trimmings that make up about 70% of the cow cutout value.
