Weekly Cattle Market Wrap Up

Weekly Cattle Market Wrap Up | Volume dips, prices react and move higher

USDA Market Reporter Ed Czerwien provides his weekly market outlook on feeder cattle and slaughter cows.

Last week's big drop in prices curtailed receipts, but prices increased quite a bit this week. There was 30,300 head at our test auctions compared to 40,000 head last week. Prices were mostly $2-8 higher with the biggest increases on lighter weights. Yearlings bound for feedlots were $2-4 higher and stocker type cattle $4-8 higher.

Cow slaughter cow receipts dropped due to road conditions and fewer bred cow specials. Prices were mostly $1-2 lower but a few auctions were higher if the buyers were short due to road conditions and low numbers.
