Mike Pearson examines the farm bill expiration and the problems that could arise if a new one isn't created in the next few months.
The Farm bill expired Sept. 30.
Without an extension of the bill, programs involving conservation will stop enrollment.
Programs such as the livestock indemnity, SNAP and livestock forage emergency programs continue without the bill in place.
However, the budget will be big news again in November and the farm bill has a deadline of January 1 before it expires and the 1940's era ag laws go into effect again.
Political observers feel that a likelihood of an extension is most likely due to political log jams next spring because of the presidential election in 2024.
Most feel that both houses of Congress will not be able to come to an agreement on new legislation will make an extension of the farm bill necessary.
Farm Progress America is a daily look at key issues in agriculture. It is produced and presented by Mike Pearson, farm broadcaster and host of This Week in Agribusiness.
