Cattle on Feed report pushes volume, price lower

Big rains in the Southern Plains cut down slaughter cow runs down a little, but prices were $2-3 lower on the heels of declining cow meat prices.

Feeder cattle volume and prices were largely influenced by big Cattle on Feed report placements, with a drop in both volume and prices especially on Monday. Luckily, prices did recover some by Wednesday and heavier weight feeders actually increased in prices because of the CME April rally for fed cattle. The return to the $120 level by Wednesday on the April fed cattle really helped feeder cattle prices on weights over 800 lbs.

When looking at slaughter cows, big rains in the Southern Plains cut the runs down a little but prices were $2-3 lower on the heels of declining cow meat prices and bigger FIS cow harvest numbers because of movement from the hurricane areas. The really tough situations in the hurricane areas have been hard on cows and pushed a lot more cows directly to slaughter plants in recent weeks.
