Meat Market Update | Choice rib primal skyrockets even higher

Ed Czerwien, market analyst based in Amarillo, Texas, offers a concise summary of how last week's beef trade impacted the cattle market and beef prices.

The daily spot Choice box beef cutout ended the week last Friday at $218.50 which was $5.03 higher compared to previous Friday. This is the third week in a row that it's been $5 or more higher than the previous week. It has continued to be helped by the increasing daily choice rib primal that was higher again during the week, along with the daily Choice loin, chuck, and round primal that were all higher.

The weekly average Choice cutout, which includes all types of sales including the daily Choice cutout, was $211.87 which was $5.66 higher and continuing to follow that daily cutout higher. The weekly average Choice rib primal was $13 higher along with $15 higher the previous week, so $28 higher in just two weeks and the main driving force in this rally. As previously mentioned, this is a normal seasonal event this time of the year when Prime Rib type of products are purchased ahead of the holiday party season.
