Meat Market Update | Grilling season rally pushes prices highers

Ed Czerwien, USDA Market News reporter in Amarillo, Texas, offers a concise summary of how last week's beef trade impacted the cattle market and beef prices.

The recent warm weather in many areas started the grilling season rally, pushing the Choice cutout higher. The weekly average Choice cutout was $3 higher for the week, but the daily spot Choice cutout jumped $16 in the last 8 working days. The daily Choice primal rib is leading the way and has climbed $28 in the last 9 working days which is typical after the weather starts to warm in the spring. Choice ribeye steaks are always an important part of the grilling season along with Choice strip steaks that are driving the Choice Loin higher also.
