Farm Progress America, November 24, 2023

Mike Pearson takes a look at the bill passed by Congress to keep the government open and what's next for the farm bill.

November 24, 2023

Mike Pearson examines the stop-gap bill to keep the government operating until January 19 and a farm bill extension to 2024.

The spending bill includes a one year extension of the farm bill.

Without the extension, several farm programs would have lost funding.

Due to procedure issues and a lack of appropriations, the farm bill was delayed.

SNAP would have also been lost without the funding passed. This extension provides funds for SNAP until September 30, 2024.

Over 41 million people receives SNAP benefits.

However, WIC does not get funding from farm bill and didn't get an extension. It will expire January 19, 2024 without congressional action.

This will mark the first trillion dollar farm bill in 2024.

The Congressional budget office says it will hit one and half trillion dollar bill if it models after the 2018 farm bill.

Farm Progress America is a daily look at key issues in agriculture. It is produced and presented by Mike Pearson, farm broadcaster and host of This Week in Agribusiness.
