Meat Market Update | Boxed beef market takes big dip in volume

Ed Czerwien, market analyst based in Amarillo, Texas, offers a concise summary of how last week's beef trade impacted the cattle market and beef prices.

The daily spot Choice box beef cutout ended the week last Friday at $206.56 which was $3.13 lower compared to previous Friday and then it continued to decline.

The daily choice rib primal and choice loin primals both dropped over $5 as the industry started the normal seasonal declines after this last big grilling season holiday. The weekly average Choice cutout which includes all types of sales including the daily Choice cutout was $206.5, 84 cents lower and almost exactly the same as the Friday daily Choice cutout.

There were 5,947 total loads sold for the week which was 21,82 loads lower than the previous week and the biggest drop in a long time, pushing the four week moving average lower and earlier than last year. This will need to be watched closely the next couple of weeks.
